Pharmacy Technician - Compounding

Location: Tempe, AZ 


As a Compounding Pharmacy Technician, you will be working on a specialized team focused on compounding medications for critically ill patients.  This role is very detail-oriented, requires specialized training (provided in-house) and has significant physical requirements. You’ll spend most of your day working inside a controlled environment (clean room suite) performing sterile compounding activities and maintenance of the suite (including daily cleaning/disinfecting of the rooms, furniture, and equipment).  Additional responsibilities include processing prescription orders, documenting compounding records, unpacking/restocking/storing supplies, performing cycle counts, sanitizing materials for use inside the clean room, performing non-sterile compounding, packing orders, cleaning the prep area, completing annual re-training/competency assessments, and assisting our general pharmacy fulfillment department when necessary.

Work Schedule:  Hourly role, 40-hours per week.  10 hour shifts Monday-Thursday 6AM-5PM with 1 hour provided for lunch (unpaid).  Schedule is subject to change due to business needs. 


NOTE:  Compounding operations will eventually include Fridays, requiring a change in scheduled shifts and/or scheduled start/end times (may be rotation of four 10 hour shifts and/or five 8 hour shifts) depending on business need. 


This role is worksite dependent and can only be performed on-site.


NOTE: Applicants MUST have a current, active Arizona pharmacy technician license in good standing. Technician trainees are NOT eligible for this position.


A little more about the day-to-day:

  • Perform sterile and hazardous non-sterile compounding with adherence to USP 795, 797, and 800 and other compounding rules and regulations in controlled environments
  • Assemble patient orders and complete necessary compounding record documentation
  • Perform required daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning/disinfecting of clean rooms, ante rooms, hoods, prep space, USP 800 rooms, and equipment wearing full-cover attire and respirators
  • Accurately and responsibly operate production equipment to include, but not limited to, scales/balances, hoods, computers, printers, etc.
  • Communicate with pharmacists to ensure they are promptly informed of any quality concerns with compounded products and/or equipment malfunctions
  • Maintain flexibility to dynamically change job functions and/or schedules to meet the needs of the business
  • Contribute to a positive work environment with the team and remain a supportive, collaborative teammate
  • Perform other duties as assigned


What you need to do the job:

  • Active Arizona Pharmacy Technician registration in good standing required (NOT trainee)
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Mail order / specialty pharmacy experience preferred
  • 1+ year of experience working as a certified pharmacy technician preferred.
  • Previous sterile compounding experience strongly preferred
  • General PC knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a pharmacy
  • Strong attention to detail with good organizational skills and self-directed task management
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to perform highly physical daily/weekly/monthly cleaning activities wearing a respirator, eye protection, and full-cover sterile garb (includes lifting objects 20-30lbs, bending, stretching, reaching above/below head and waist, kneeling, and climbing step ladders)
  • Adherence to strict personal hygiene requirements prohibiting the wearing of jewelry, makeup, hair extensions, false eyelashes, and long and/or false fingernails while working
  • NOTE: Clean, freshly laundered scrubs are required to be worn each day during compounding. It is employees’ responsibility to purchase and maintain proper attire.
  • Ability to adapt in a dynamic work environment and learn quickly
  • Ability to identify issues and clearly communicate them to pharmacists / management for assessment and decision making
  • Successful completion of our 160-hour training curriculum and ongoing competency assessments as required by USP 795, 797, and 800
